University of Sharjah Researchers Publish Groundbreaking Study on Driver Safety
The Department of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (IEEM) at the University of Sharjah continues to make significant strides in solving real-world industrial challenges through impactful research and student collaboration.
A new study titled “Driver Risk Classification for Transportation Safety: A Machine Learning Approach Using Psychological, Physiological, and Demographic Factors with a Driving Simulator” has been published in the prestigious Q1 journal Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence (EAAI) (Impact Factor: 8.0). The research, conducted in collaboration with faculty, students, and staff, addresses driver safety challenges in the UAE taxi industry. Using advanced machine learning models and the Smart Manufacturing Lab’s driving simulator, the team developed an innovative framework to help companies improve driver recruitment and fleet safety by identifying low-risk drivers. The study was led by Dr. Malek Masmoudi (main and corresponding author), Prof. Imad Alsyouf, and Prof. Ali Cheaitou, with contributions from IEEM alumni Yasmeen Shakrouf, Fatima Abdalla, Wadad Alketbi, Lab Engineer Eng. Omar Hassan Omar, and Postdoctoral Researcher Dr. Ali I. Siam.
