Exeter–Sharjah Center for Interdisciplinary Studies

I am grateful to welcome you to the Exeter–Sharjah Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, located within the Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Sharjah. This Center reflects a commitment partnership between the University of Sharjah and the University of Exeter to develop sustainable, high-impact interdisciplinary research in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

As part of our long-term commitment to developing sustainable infrastructure to support collaborative interdisciplinary research and active academic exchange, we will organise joint workshops, interdisciplinary research clusters, academic visits, seminars, and an international symposium between the University of Exeter and the University of Sharjah.

The Center aims to provide a dynamic space for faculty members, researchers, and graduate students to undertake complex-impact, high-priority projects at the regional and global levels.

The Exeter-Sharjah Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies is one of the most recent research centres within the Human and Social Sciences Research Institute at the University of Sharjah. This centre was officially established on November 6, 2025, pursuant to the Chancellor’s decision.

The centre aims to facilitate research partnerships between faculty members at the University of Sharjah and the University of Exeter and to serve as an active centre for interdisciplinary studies in the social sciences and humanities.

The Exeter-Sharjah Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies focuses on producing excellent interdisciplinary research that addresses contemporary and emerging problems at global, local, and regional scales. It fosters a research environment in which scholars, students, and research partners collaborate to produce interdisciplinary studies that address current research trends and global issues.

The centre aims to strengthen joint research cooperation between the University of Sharjah and the University of Exeter through:

1. Conducting joint studies that contribute to advancing research and mutual cultural exchange.

2. Coordinating collaborative research between the two universities in fields related to the humanities and social sciences.

3. Organizing joint academic activities (seminars, workshops, conferences) that support interdisciplinary research pathways.

4. Supporting the exchange of researchers and students between the two universities within the framework of interdisciplinary studies.
