Director's Welcome

We welcome you all to the Center for Family and Child Studies CFCS. It is one of the distinguished research centers of the Institute of Research in Humanities and Social Sciences (RIHSS) - the office of the Vice Chancellor for Scientific Research and Graduate Studies. The Center seeks to conduct a systematic, scientific, and sustainable study of the state of the Emirati and Arab family. This is achieved by monitoring the family challenges and understanding the new changes that occur in the life of the family and its members considering the cultural and civilizational diversity that we are witnessing today in a changing world.

The center relies on effective partnerships with various family institutions in the UAE society to work together. Monitoring problems and drawing up programs and strategies for the future of the extended family and the nucleus that embraces children, the elderly, youth, and women are our shared goals. The center is creating a database for families and children in the Emirate of Sharjah and the country. Also, creating comprehensive statistical indicators on family and child issues in accordance with local, regional, and international standards. This will formulate well-studied plans that help institutions and families implement their plans and programs.

The successive family studies, in cooperation and partnership with family institutions, will increase our ability to find curative, preventive and development initiatives that put the family in its appropriate framework. In addition, identifying the needs and requirements, through which future decisions affecting the family and future generations are built, is to achieve the family's ability to live in luxury according to possible community standards.

The team of the Center for Family and Child Studies (CFCS) is pleased to invite researchers from local, Arab, and international institutions, the university, and all graduate students to participate and benefit from the capabilities, experiences and opportunities available to us. This will implement studies and consultations that serve our Emirati and Arab families.

Center for Family and Child Studies (CFCS)

Who We Are

The Center for Family and Child Studies is the first such entity in the UAE that deals exclusively with family and child issues. It aims to enhance family cohesiveness, the quality of marriage relations, and child socialization, while enabling family members to better deal with family problems and attempting to reduce the rate of divorce. It is our goal to improve the mental health and social wellbeing of all families based on the findings and recommendations of research conducted jointly by members from the University of Sharjah and the Supreme Council for Family Affairs in the Emirate of Sharjah.

Background

The main objective of the Center for Family and Child Studies is to align the efforts of the University of Sharjah and local family and child organisations in the Emirate of Sharjah to implement a clear and well-defined strategy for conducting regular, longitudinal, and follow-up studies on all matters related to family and children. In addition, it attempts to prioritize research projects that would inform decision makers on the most appropriate practices in family intervention, care, and protection.

The center is specifically concerned with multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary studies in such varied fields as social work, education, sociology, law, health sciences, Sharia, fine arts, business, communication, and psychology and applying the findings of these studies to new policies and practices. This approach would yield robust scientific research that would serve the local community; an achievable goal as the University boasts a large number of expert researchers, while the Supreme Council for Family Affairs has direct access to all the relevant cases and data.

Objectives of the Center:

Conduct essential research on family and child.

Develop a family and child database for the Emirate of Sharjah that would inform future relevant plans and programs.

Develop comprehensive statistical indicators for family and child issues that comply with local, regional, and international standards

Enhance the research capabilities of the employees of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs.

Collaborate with concerned entities such as the prosecutor general, courts, schools, nurseries, and the media in order to develop a clearer understanding of the family situation in the emirate based on sound scientific knowledge.

Provide research consultation and compliment the expertise and knowledge of academic researchers, practitioners, and decision makers in the field.

Develop best practice in the area of family and child according to the findings of studies conducted by the center.

Provide the Supreme Council for Family Affairs with the findings of research studies conducted by the center to inform its decision making on relevant matters.

Partner with the Family Marsad which is affiliated to Supreme Council for Family Affairs.
