University of Sharjah Ranks 67th Globally in Sustainability
1st in the UAE for the Eighth Consecutive Year
2nd in the GCC | 3rd in the Arab World
The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings (UIGWUR) organization has announced its 2024 results, placing the University of Sharjah (UoS) at 67th globally for sustainability and commitment to environmentally friendly practices. The University has retained its 1st position in the UAE for the eighth consecutive year, and was ranked 2nd in the GCC and 3rd in the Arab world.

Leadership in Sustainability
His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, emphasized that the University, under the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, continues to adopt the principles of sustainability and uphold the highest environmental standards. He noted that sustainability has become a global priority, requiring collaborative efforts across all sectors—particularly academic institutions.
Prof. Al Naimiy added that the University of Sharjah recognizes its responsibility toward the environment and society and strives to integrate a culture of sustainability across all aspects of university life. Since joining the UI GreenMetric rankings in 2017, UoS has consistently demonstrated excellence and leadership, maintaining its position as one of the region’s foremost sustainable universities.

UoS Achievements and Progress
The UI GreenMetric World University Ranking evaluates institutions worldwide based on six main indicators: Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation, and Education.
Over eight consecutive years of participation (2017–2024), the University of Sharjah has shown remarkable progress across these indicators. In 2023, UoS advanced to be ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide, excelling particularly in Setting and Infrastructure, Water, Waste, and Education categories.
In 2024, the University achieved even greater milestones, ranking:
- 6th globally in Infrastructure, reflecting its state-of-the-art facilities, effective crisis response systems, and expansive green spaces.
- 23rd globally in Water Management, recognizing its efficient water conservation practices.
- 24th globally in Education, underscoring the integration of sustainability within academic programs, research, and student engagement.
Commitment and Sustainability Initiatives
Prof. Al Naimiy reaffirmed the University’s ongoing commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through a wide range of initiatives, including:
- Investing in research and innovation to develop environmentally friendly technologies and sustainable energy and water solutions.
- Constructing eco-friendly buildings powered by renewable energy and advanced conservation systems.
- Integrating sustainability-focused courses into academic curricula.
- Engaging the wider community through awareness campaigns, workshops, seminars, and events to promote sustainability values.
The University also encourages its researchers and students to conduct applied scientific research addressing global environmental challenges, reinforcing its position as a leader in sustainability and responsible innovation.
