Guidelines for Presentation

  • Candidates prepare a talk on the topic (capstone, thesis, or dissertation) that lasts no more than three minutes in total. Competitors who exceed the three-minute presentation time limit will be disqualified.
  • Focus on or spotlight the main ideas and leave out details.
  • One static slide may be used for the presentation. Slide transitions, animations, or other types of “movement” are not permitted. Use graphics to illustrate key points. Avoid clutter—use less text and more visuals.
  • Use time efficiently.
  • Avoid speaking too quickly to cover everything; instead, condense the material to fit the time limit with a focus on key points.
  • Use simple and concise language. Simple is often better.
  • Be very selective with your terminologies. Keep in mind the audience.
  • Additional props are not allowed, such as clothes, musical instruments, lab apparatus, or animated backgrounds.
  • Practice, practice, practice: speak aloud, time yourself, and use a mock audience.
