2023/2024 UoS 3M
Overview
Get ready for the second round of our UoS-3M competition!
The ability to communicate capstone projects, theses or dissertations to general audience in 3 minutes or less is an important skill that we hope all of UoS students are able to master.
Date: Week of April 15th, 2024
Time: 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Venue: Al Bayruni, M9
Competition Categories
The UoS-3M competition is organized under two (2) major categories:
- Undergraduate (Capstone/Theses)
- Postgraduate (Theses/Dissertation)
Nomination
Each college will nominate up to three (3) candidates for each of the categories to compete at the University Level. These three (3) candidates would be the finalists of a similar competition that is held at the College Level.
Competition Objective
- Improve student’s ability to communicate their ideas clearly to a non-specialized audience, which is essential for success in both academic and professional settings.
- Spotlight and explain innovative study findings in 3 minutes.
- Gain useful experience to enhance marketability and employability skills.
- Communicate the research output of UoS students to the community at large.
Guidelines for Presentation
- Candidates prepare a talk on the topic (capstone/thesis/dissertation) that lasts no more than three minutes in total.
- Competitors who exceed the 3-minute presentation time limit will be disqualified.
- Focus on, or spotlight the main ideas and leave out details.
- One static slide could be used for presentation. Slide transitions, animations, or other types of “movement” are not permitted. Use graphics to illustrate key points. Avoid cluttering, less text and more visuals.
- Use time efficiently.
- Avoid talking fast in an attempt to cover everything, instead cut down material to fit the time (focus).
- Use simple and concise language. “Simple is often better”
- Be very selective with your terminologies. Keep in mind the audience.
- Additional props are not allowed, such as clothes, musical instruments, lab apparatus, or animated backgrounds.
- Practice, practice, practice: aloud, timing, use mock audience.
