Arriving in Sharjah, UAE
Welcome to the City of Sharjah! Whether you’re flying into Sharjah International Airport (IATA Code: SHJ) or Dubai International Airport (IATA Code: DXB), here are some useful instructions to help you reach your destination smoothly. Depending on the participants' arrival, we foresee that transportation may be provided.
Arriving via Sharjah International Airport (SHJ)
By Taxi:
- Taxis are readily available outside the arrivals area.
- The journey to the city center typically takes about 15–25 minutes, depending on traffic.
- The fare usually ranges from AED 30 to AED 60.
By Bus:
- Bus Route 14 operates from the airport to various locations in Sharjah.
- Buses run approximately every 30 minutes.
- The fare is AED 8 per person.
Arriving via Dubai International Airport (DXB)
By Taxi:
- Taxis are available 24/7 outside all terminals.
- The drive to Sharjah takes about 30–45 minutes, depending on traffic.
- Expect to pay around AED 80 to AED 120.
By Bus:
- Take the Intercity Bus Route E306 or E307A from Dubai Airport to Al Jubail Bus Station in Sharjah.
- Buses run frequently throughout the day.
- The fare is AED 15 per person.
By Metro and Bus:
- From Dubai Airport, take the Red Line Metro to Union Station.
- From Union Station, transfer to the E306 or E307A bus to Sharjah.
- This combined journey costs around AED 20 and takes approximately 1.5 hours.
General Tips
- Currency: The currency in the UAE is the Emirati Dirham (AED). It’s advisable to have some cash on hand for taxis and small purchases.
- Language: Arabic is the official language, but English is widely spoken and understood.
- Traffic: Be mindful of peak traffic hours (7:00 AM – 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM) as they can significantly increase travel time.
- Local Transportation Apps: You can use apps like Careem and Uber for convenient ride-hailing services.

VISA Regulations for Visitors to the UAE

MENA Region
- GCC Countries: Citizens of GCC countries (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, and Qatar) do not require a visa to enter the UAE.
- Other MENA Countries: Visitors from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, and similar countries need to apply for a tourist visa, which is typically valid for 30 days and can be extended.
Turkey
- Turkish Citizens: Turkish nationals need a visa to enter the UAE. They can apply for an e-visa online. The tourist visa is usually valid for 30 days and can be extended.
India
- Indian Citizens: Indian nationals require a visa to visit the UAE. They can apply for an e-visa online or through a UAE-based sponsor. Indian citizens with a valid US visa or green card can obtain a visa on arrival for 14 days.
Rest of the World
- Visa Exempt Countries: Citizens of several countries, including the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and most EU countries, do not need to apply for a visa in advance and can obtain a visa on arrival. This visa is typically valid for 30 days and can be extended.
- Other Countries: Visitors from countries not eligible for visa on arrival must apply for a visa before traveling. The process involves submitting an application online or through a UAE embassy or consulate.
General Information
- Visa Application: Apply through the UAE embassy/consulate or the UAE’s online e-visa system.
- Required Documents: Valid passport (minimum six months validity), completed application form, passport-sized photos, proof of accommodation, and return ticket.
- Processing Time: Typically 3 to 5 working days.
- Extension: Tourist visas can often be extended for an additional fee.
