University of Sharjah Explores Collaboration with the National Center of Meteorology
The Sharjah Smart Center for Climate Resilience (SSCCR) at the University of Sharjah held a meeting with representatives from the National Center of Meteorology (NCM) to explore potential areas of collaboration in climate and environmental research.
The meeting followed a presentation by Prof. Qassim, who highlighted SSCCR’s research capabilities and ongoing initiatives in climate resilience and sustainability. During the discussion, both sides explored opportunities to collaborate on two key technical projects.
The first project focuses on hydrological modeling using GIS-based simulation tools, such as HEC-RAS and LISFLOOD, to enhance flood risk assessment and early warning systems. NCM indicated its support by providing high-resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data and rainfall observations from its national monitoring network.
The second project involves the assessment of satellite-based soil moisture products over the UAE environment, including datasets from SMAP (NASA) and SMOS (ESA). NCM’s ground-based soil moisture observation network will support validation and benchmarking activities.
The collaboration aims to strengthen environmental monitoring, improve predictive capabilities for extreme weather events, and support data-driven climate resilience initiatives in the UAE.
