Center Strategy, Achievements, and Alignment with National Priorities
The Sharjah Smart Center for Climate Resilience (SSCCR) hosted a meeting on 13 January 2026 focusing on the vision, mission, and achievements of the center and its alignment with national priorities in climate resilience and sustainability. The meeting brought together senior leadership, multidisciplinary faculty members, researchers with H.E. Prof. Kamal Youcef-Toumi - Board of Trustees Committees (Academic Committee) - Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Director of the Center for Complex Engineering Systems at King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, KSA, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA
The key discussions highlighted the Center’s integrated research approach across engineering, computing, health, science, and social domains, with presentations covering recent UAE flood events, rainfall prediction models, stormwater drainage optimization, climate change analysis, and advanced AI-driven applications for weather, climate, and earth systems
The meeting concluded with an open and constructive dialogue on future directions, challenges, and opportunities for collaboration. Key challenges identified included funding, data availability, computing facilities, and media coverage, alongside the need for enhanced laboratory infrastructure. Prof. Kamal Youcef-Toumi emphasized the importance of international knowledge exchange, while encouraging structured collaborations over traditional MoUs. The discussion also underscored the role of a supportive research environment, effective operations, and a positive workplace culture in enabling impactful, high-quality research aligned with national and regional priorities.
