With the Aim of Raising Awareness of Astronomy and Space Sciences: SAASST Participates in the “Arab Science Week”
Under the patronage of His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, General Director of the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology (SAASST), and President of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, SAASST participated in the "Arab Science Week" in collaboration with the Colleges of Sciences and Engineering at the University of Sharjah. The Arab Science Week launched on August 15th, 2020 and continues its activities for (9) days. ASW is the largest virtual celebration of sciences and technology in the Arab World. It comes this year under the slogan "Future Aspirations" and in collaboration with several Arab entities including the University of Dubai, Society for the Advancement of Science and Technology in the Arab World (SASTA), Scince and Development Network Middle East and North Africa, the UAE Space Agency, and SAASST.
The "Arab Science Week" includes more than 190 speakers, including scientists, researchers and experts from scientific, research and academic institutions from all over the Arab world, with the presence of more than 5,000 enthusiasts of space and astronomy in each session, and it focuses on six important themes: technological aspirations, sustainable Earth, science fundamentals, science in our daily lives, and disaster preparedness.
The participation of the Academy and the Colleges of Science and Engineering at the University of Sharjah was in several lectures and workshops, including the lectures on "Science and Engineering on the Nanoscale" and "Solar Energy Conversion" by Prof. Nouar Tabet, Dean of the College of Science, during which he reviewed the scientific and technological breakthroughs that made it possible to see atoms and molecules and manipulate them to engineer devices such as solar cells and transistors, to modify DNA with atomic precision, and to explain the conversion of solar energy from cell to plate and emerging materials to make it into clean, affordable future energy. Prof. Ahmed Al-Shammaa, Dean of the College of Engineering, gave a lecture entitled "Nature's Inspiration for Engineering Inventions: Excellence and Innovation in our Daily Life". In this lecture, the Dean of the College of Engineering provided an insightful look into the past, present and future of science and engineering as well as the challenges meeting our evolving world. It also highlighted many creative and innovative engineering research projects undertaken at the University of Sharjah in partnership with various international universities and entities.
From the Academy, the Planetarium and Space Exhibitions Department participated in a number of virtual planetarium shows that took the attendees on a virtual tour traveling using the Planetarium simulation technology and their imagination from the UAE to the depths of outer space, passing by the Moon, Sun and planets, then looking back at the Milky Way Galaxy after leaving it and examining the local group of galaxies and the observed Universe. They also participated with a workshop titled "Journey to Mars", which lasted for three days and attracted more than 350 students passionate about space and astronomy. The Research Laboratories Department and the Sharjah Optical Observatory presented several lectures, most notably the lecture "Sharjah Sat-1Technology" in which Eng. Ibrahim AlSabt, Research Assistant in the CubeSat Laboratory, touched on the concept of CubeSats, how they are made, and their scientific importance in studying the Universe; and a lecture "Radio Observations of the Universe", during which Asma AlHameed, Research Assistant at the Radio Astronomy Laboratory, presented an explanation of how the Universe is observed using radio waves and radio telescopes at the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Science, and Technology.
Prof. Mashhoor Wardat, Deputy General Director of SAASST for Academic Affairs and Sharjah Optical Observatory also presented a lecture titled "Sharjah Optical Observatory", during which he reviewed various techniques and applications of astronomical observation, spectroscopy, spectral observations, direct optical observations, solar observations, H-Alpha solar line observations, binary stars, and the deep Universe.
His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, founded the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology as a national development project and research center that seeks to serve and educate society in all areas of space science and to be a world leader in space sciences and technology research while establishing the United Arab Emirates as a scientific center in the Arab Gulf region and the world.
In its endeavor to achieve His Highness's vision of paying attention to scientific research that serves the development of society, SAASST is one of the most comprehensive academies in the country and the region covering the fields of education and scientific research in space sciences, astronomy and technology while organizing informative workshops, lectures, seminars and conferences that benefit professionals and amateurs in this field alike. SAASST also adapts to circumstances such as COVID-19 and ensures the continuity of offering services and the scientific material to the community utilizing available means and technologies.
