UoS Launches PhD Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences
The College of Pharmacy at the University of Sharjah (UoS) is offering a distinguished PhD program in Pharmaceutical Sciences, the first of its kind in the country. This program provides a unique opportunity for professionals in various sectors, including the pharmaceutical industry, academia, regulatory authorities, and healthcare providers, to become future leaders in these fields.
Human Resources in Global Crisis Management
His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of UoS, stated that the COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the fundamental importance of having qualified human resources in every country working in healthcare and medical services. He added that the University of Sharjah conducts numerous studies related to the academic and professional programs needed by various sectors, particularly in the medical and health fields. This allows the University to offer academic programs that align with job market needs at both local and international levels.
Unique Medical Complex
The Chancellor emphasized that the University of Sharjah has a unique medical complex in the Middle East and Gulf region, featuring four colleges: the College of Medicine, the College of Dental Medicine, the College of Pharmacy, and the College of Health Sciences. In addition, the complex includes two hospitals, a Medical Education Centre, the Sharjah Institute for Medical Research, and other institutes. The university is continuously developing its medical complex with the latest laboratories, facilities, and modern tools to enhance the teaching and learning process, and to support students during their academic journey by providing them with hands-on experience according to international standards. This preparation aims to ensure that graduates become highly qualified medical professionals, well-trained and ready to contribute to the medical and health sectors, thereby improving the quality of healthcare services in the region.
The Program Aligns with Pharmaceutical Industry Needs
Prof. Qutayba Hamid, Vice Chancellor for Medical Colleges and Health Sciences and Dean of the College of Medicine, emphasized that the Ph.D. Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences is the first of its kind in the country. It aims to provide students with advanced knowledge through scientific courses to conduct advanced research in the field of pharmaceutical sciences. The program also prepares students to meet the requirements of the job market.
Prof. Karim El-Zu'bi, Dean of the College of Pharmacy, pointed out that the program has three concentrations: pharmacology, pharmaceutics, and medicinal chemistry. He emphasized that the university provides students with cutting-edge equipment, laboratories, and resources through its various institutes, such as the Research Institute for Medical and Health Sciences. This creates a world-class research environment, enhances students' learning experiences, and enables them to conduct scientific studies, perform sophisticated experiments, and analyze data using the latest methodologies and technologies, thereby contributing to the advancement of pharmaceutical sciences.
Interdisciplinary Research
The Dean of the College of Pharmacy emphasized that the college promotes a culture of academic excellence by encouraging interdisciplinary research, which allows students to explore new horizons and develop innovative solutions for the pharmaceutical industry. He also highlighted the university's and the college's policies, which are intended to build bridges with various sectors in the country and serve the community through collaboration with professionals in the pharmaceutical industry and research institutions, both locally and globally. This approach provides students with opportunities to participate in research projects that benefit the community and support the pharmaceutical industry.
