UoS College of Pharmacy Programs Receives International Accreditation
The College of Pharmacy (CoP) at the University of Sharjah (UoS) has received the International accreditation by the US-based Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), for its Bachelor of Pharmacy and the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) programs. This accreditation was granted following the visit by the council’s evaluation team last October, in which the PharmD program has been granted international accreditation status, with the Bachelor of Pharmacy program being reclassified to the same status.The CoP at the University now stands as the first Pharmacy college in the United Arab Emirates to receive the international accreditation for its post-baccalaureate Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). This places the CoP among the accredited international pharmacy colleges of American universities. Notably, the UoS’s College of Pharmacy is the largest in terms of the number of students enrollment and is the first and sole college in the country to introduce a doctoral program in pharmaceutical sciences at the beginning of the academic year 2023/2024. This program focuses on three areas including the drug design and discovery, pharmaceutical technology, and pharmacology, alongside a master's program within the field.
On this occasion, His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, UOS Chancellor, extended his congratulations to His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah, on this international achievement, pointing out that the College of Pharmacy has achieved this accomplishment with the continuous support and care of His Highness. He noted that the programs of College of Pharmacy, including Bachelor of Pharmacy and the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) programs, obtained the Accreditation from ACPE the world leader in providing exemplary accreditation services to support and advance pharmacy education and profession.The Chancellor highlighted the vital role of the College of Pharmacy in disseminating the pharmaceutical knowledge within the local community and nationally, emphasizing the significance of the pharmaceutical industry and the role of pharmacists in contributing to the national economy and the healthcare system. This is achieved through focusing on quality pharmaceutical education, training graduates, and equipping them with world-class practical skills necessary for effective pharmaceutical care delivery.
Prof. Qutayba Hamid, Vice Chancellor for Medical Colleges and Health Sciences, highlighted the importance of the international accreditation for the medical colleges as it reflects the efforts of the colleges in preparing graduates to become qualified pharmacists and support the healthcare system, aligning with the UAE vision in teaching and learning. He pointed out that the University of Sharjah is distinguished by the Medical Campus which encompasses the Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Dental Medicine, and Health Sciences, along with the University Hospital Sharjah (UHS), University Dental Hospital Sharjah (UDHS), and the Sharjah Institute for Medical Research. These facilities provide an optimal environment for the University students, focusing on the quality of education and learning.Prof. Karim El-Zu'bi, Dean of the College of Pharmacy, affirmed that this international achievement reflects the concerted effort between the university’s administration and faculty members, emphasizing that the CoP offers the best training opportunities for its students to work in various hospitals and pharmacies in the UAE, underlining the importance of equipping graduates with the skills needed to lead various healthcare disciplines.
