UoS Celebrates UAE Codes Day 2023

In celebration of UAE Codes Day 2023, the College of Computing and Informatics at the University of Sharjah (UoS), in collaboration with the Colleges of Business Administration, Engineering, and Sciences, conducted a series of scientific lectures and workshops delivered by specialists, experts, and UoS faculty members to solidify programming concepts, promote digital transformation, enhance the role of programmers and technological developers, and raise awareness about the latest technological advancements among students.

These activities included panel discussions featuring Mr. Will Badr, Head of the Artificial Intelligence and Software Department at Amazon Web Services (AWS), and David Toman, a Consultant at the Artificial Intelligence Office. UoS’s faculty members also participated in delivering short informative talks on "Driving Innovation through Innovative Technology" and "Programming in the Era of Development, Ethics, and Education.” On the sideline of the event, UoS student clubs organized numerous interactive activities in fields of programming and artificial intelligence, and the winners were announced in the competition organized by the College of Computing and Informatics, sponsored by Sharjah Entrepreneurship Centre (Sheraa). Student Karam Al Shouraa won the first place, Yaser Alesh won second place, and Mohammed Moqadhe won third place.

Participants and sponsors of the competition were also honoured. It is worth mentioning that the UAE Codes Day highlights the critical role of coders in society, contributing to enhancing the position of the United Arab Emirates as an attractive destination for enabling coders and an incubating hub for talents. His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah (UoS), pointed out that the University’s celebration of UAE Codes day is a great opportunity to exchange knowledge in the field of coding, showcase coders’ skills, and understand the applications of coding in academic programs offered by the University. The Chancellor also extended his sincere thanks and appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah, for his continued support of all the University’s activities that inspire students and enhance their innovative skills.

He added: “we are resolute in our determination to lead in areas such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, cybersecurity, and beyond. We are committed to unlocking the full potential of coding for the betterment of society, the advancement of our economy, and the enhancement of our citizens' lives.” Prof. Youssef Al Haik, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, highlighted the fundamental role played by the programming and technology in shaping the future of society. He emphasized the importance of providing youth with the digital skills and tools needed to understand the advancement of technology, artificial intelligence, blockchain, and robotics and their impact on society, industry, and the economy. Explaining that programming is not only about creating software, it is about creating a better future through practical experiments to explore the possibilities that technology offers.Prof. Abbes Amira, Dean of the College of Computing and Informatics, stated that this initiative focuses on the impact of artificial intelligence on programming, its influence on teaching methods, and educational outcomes. It also aims to understand technology and the use of modern platforms.
