The University of Sharjah’s College of Engineering Uses the Latest Hybrid Learning Technologies in its Practical Courses
The University of Sharjah following the instructions issued by the official health authorities in the country, takes many precautionary and preventive measures that it provides to its students and workers to ensure the continuation of the educational process in it according to the hybrid education system, where theoretical lectures are taught remotely through its virtual educational platforms, while the practical courses are taught in person in the University laboratories. In this context, the College of Engineering at the University of Sharjah announced the development of a hybrid plan at the beginning of the new academic year to define the mechanism for teaching practical courses.
In this context, the College has worked to convert a large number of laboratory experiments into virtual practical experiments through interactive simulation methods, where the course instructor uses "Interaction & Simulation" programs to implement the experiment virtually and the students interact with the devices as if they are actually in the laboratory. This is while adjusting these experiments periodically to ensure the quality of educational outcomes. The College also coordinated with the Central Laboratories Department to use the "JOVE Video Library" to provide various educational resources for students to see the details of the advanced experiences instead of reading them.
As for the courses that will require the student to personally attend the laboratory, the College of Engineering has coordinated with the Central Laboratories Department in the process of taking and implementing all preventive measures within all laboratories of the College by ensuring that all students, faculty members and laboratory engineers present in the laboratories have performed a COVID-19 test with the necessity to show them the negative test result, which is valid for a period of four days. This in addition to following up on the commitment of laboratory users, including faculty members, students, and laboratory engineers, with all preventive measures set by the University administration and the Central Laboratories Department to ensure safety in laboratories, sterilize and disinfect all laboratories throughout the day and provide all personal protective equipment and disinfectants necessary for all, while keeping a complete record of all students who use the laboratories, as well as providing all laboratories with emergency medical service numbers to contact when needed.
The College administration also focused on following up on achieving the requirements of social and physical distancing, distributing instructional posters, providing manual sterilization devices in laboratories and in the corridors, and working on establishing timetables for the use of shared work spaces and equipment in accordance with the pre-prepared plan and in order to achieve the continuity of laboratory work, as well as placing posters on floors to maintain a distance of not less than two meters. In the event that the experiences require reducing the distance between users, the College obliges them to wear masks and face shields, and has made sure that the devices that each student needs are located within the work area specified for him in advance, to avoid collective use of equipment and prevent excessive movement inside the laboratory. As for the entry and exit processes, each laboratory has an entrance and exit.
