The University of Sharjah and Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority Research Collaboration to Produce Fresh Water from Air
Within the framework of constructive cooperation with local authorities and institutions with the aim of serving and developing the local community, Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, received Dr. Eng. Rashid Al-Leem, Chairman of the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority. Prof. Maamar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, attended the meeting along with Dr. Salah Taher, Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs; Mr. Majed Al Jarwan, Vice Chancellor for Public Relations; and Prof. Ahmed Al-Shama'a, Dean of the College of Engineering
This visit comes to attend a test of a research project that the University is working on in collaboration with the Authority represented by the Research and Studies Department. The project is "Measuring and Analyzing the Performance of Water Systems from Air in the Weather Conditions of Sharjah". It aims to develop a sustainable system to produce fresh and clean drinking water from the air using the renewable and clean energy system, and examines water quality, production quantity, and energy consumption.
During the visit, His Excellency Dr. Eng. Rashid Al-Leem, Chairman of the Authority, confirmed that cooperation is continuing with the Uiversity in scientific research in energy efficiency, environment, water sources and desalination, development of electricity, water and gas distribution networks, administrative development, energy rationalization, and renewable and alternative energy. This to implement the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, which stipulates the necessity to rely on specialized studies and research and apply best practices in the fields of energy, water and the environment.
Al-Leem praised cooperation with the University of Sharjah in the integrated research project to produce fresh water from air. He added that the University is a pioneering educational institution in higher education and scientific research in the country and in the Middle East region, and it plays a major role in developing the local community while providing various rehabilitation services and contributing to the development of various fields.
For his part, His Excellency the Chancellor affirmed that the University of Sharjah, thanks to the continuous and unlimited support of its President the Ruler of Sharjah is working to serve and develop the local community through applied scientific research. He pointed out that the constructive cooperation with the Authority resulted in (25) scientific research publications in international journals in specializations such as energy, water, and gas. They also have nine ongoing joint scientific research projects with nine doctoral and master's students who work at the Authority.
He added that the University of Sharjah is interested in applied scientific research, and places it among its strategic priorities with the aim of developing the community and working to solve its problems by translating research into applications and providing innovative solutions to the community. He continued adding that the scientific research sector at the University has a distinguished research output in terms of quantity and quality and this is highlighted in the global database (Scopus).
