SAASST Organizes a General Lecture on Near-Earth Objects
Within the Academy's series of general lectures for the academic year 2020/2021, the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology (SAASST) organized a lecture entitled Near-Earth Objects. These lectures aim to raise public awareness of space sciences and astronomy and are held on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month to attract enthusiasts, students, and professors in astronomy and space sciences. They also intend to deliver scientific information in a simplified, easily digestible manner while raising awareness of this field's importance and the latest developments in the UAE Space Sector.
Mr. Mohammed Talafha, a Research Observer at SAASST's Sharjah Optical Observatory, addressed in this lecture the definition of near-Earth objects, their classifications, and methods for observing them. He also shared examples of international observatories that monitor near-Earth objects and some results from the Sharjah Optical Observatory.
SAASST launched this series of general lectures following the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah. His Highness founded SAASST as a national development project and research center that seeks to serve and educate society in all areas of space science. The Academy is aiming to become a world leader in space sciences and technology research while establishing the United Arab Emirates as a scientific center in the Arab Gulf region and the world. It also aims to enhance research and scientific capabilities in astronomy and space sciences by providing the knowledge, awareness, infrastructure, and technology necessary to support various efforts in the space sector in line with the United Arab Emirates' strategic objectives.
