By the University of Sharjah A Workshop to Identify Best International Experiences and Practices in Conducting Online Exams
Under the patronage and presence of His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, and with the aim of reviewing the best international systems for conducting examinations and evaluation in accordance with locally and internationally approved standards. The Leadership Institute in Higher Education at the University organized a workshop in Arabic and English spanning over two days that dealt with identifying the experiences in conducting examinations and evaluating the educational process and academic achievement. It also worked to find the best possible electronic means to achieve complete accuracy and objectivity in the evaluation process, in order to achieve the desired goal of the educational process and take into account the interest of the student. The workshop also provided an opportunity for faculty members to exchange visions and experiences gained during the previous academic year in using various means to conduct the evaluation process, and to present many recommendations and proposals regarding the rules for developing questions and different evaluation methods according to each major and college.
The University Vice Chancellors, College Deans, Department Heads, and faculty members along with the IT and Academic Computing Departments attended the workshop. It started with a speech by the Chancellor of the University in which he praised the success of the experience of the University of Sharjah during the previous academic year in implementing the distance learning process following the precautionary measures and procedures issued by the relevant authority. The University was able to take advantage of its technological and technical capabilities, academic and technical expertise, and its qualified infrastructure by continuing the educational and teaching process and conducting all examinations according to the highest degrees of accuracy and objectivity.
His Excellency the University Chancellor also stressed the importance of the topic that was raised in that workshop since it represents the primary concern of all educational institutions locally and internationally these days. This is due to the exceptional circumstances that continue to this day that compel institutions to search for the best means and methods to continue the educational process in all its stages. He pointed out that the University started working to increase the benefit from that experience and benefit from its potential in the future, stressing the importance of taking into account all environmental and societal conditions for the student when setting questions and helping him to overcome technical problems, if any.
For his part, Prof. Sherif Sedky, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, referred to academic integrity and work to instill many positive values in the student during the educational process, including scientific honesty, self-control, and fair competition, in parallel with the scientific and knowledge values that are taking place.
During the workshop, Dr. Hussein El Mahdi, Dean of Academic Support Services, gave a presentation in which he summarized the most important points that the University had made during this period, and the ongoing preparations for conducting the exams. These points focused on the method of offering examinations and training and solving the technical problems faced by students, especially students who are in regions outside the country and suffer from problems in network coverage and speed.
Prof. Esam El-Din Agamy, Dean of the Deanship of Quality Assurance, Institutional Effectiveness and Accreditation, discussed during his speech the most important basics to maintain the University's reputation through reliable electronic exams, which are determined by many local and international institutions, including the Academic Accreditation Authority, the standards of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), and the Accreditation Council for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
Prof. Ahmed Al-Shama'a, Dean of the College of Engineering, referred to electronic exams from the perspective of faculty members and information technology, explaining the most important technological resources that the University currently relies on in the evaluation process and conducting examinations, and a review of some of the challenges and difficulties encountered, and the follow-up and control mechanisms to maintain the accuracy and quality of the examination process.
For their part, the faculty members participating in this workshop praised the scientific content presented through it, stressing on achieving scientific benefit from previous experiences that were presented. Then several faculty members shared their experiences in conducting electronic exams, reviewing the challenges that were faced with the recommendation of the importance and necessity of taking into account the psychological, environmental and societal conditions of each student, and continuous and constant communication with them to help overcome all technical obstacles, and to develop various alternatives for evaluation and questions.
