According to the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings: The University of Sharjah Ranks First Locally, Third in the GCC, and 8th in the Arab Region

In implementation of the directives of its President His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, that calls for attention to sustainable development, addressing environmental problems, and integrating and applying the concept of sustainability in many courses and activities within the University. The University of Sharjah continues its progress in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, which works on the classification and evaluation of universities worldwide in the fields of sustainable development and commitment to clean environment standards. The University of Sharjah ranked first at the UAE level for the fourth consecutive year, and 194 at the level of world universities.

His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, announced the results and emphasized the growing interest in the fields of sustainable development and commitment to clean environment standards at the University. He explained that the University is working to raise awareness among students about sustainability and how to address environmental problems that have a severe impact on communities. This is through the many activities and events that the University holds during the academic year with students, faculty, and staff members. The University also established the Sustainability Office several years ago, which in turn formed many sustainability groups and circles. The Office works to implement and integrate the concept of sustainability into every aspect of life within the University as well as caring for and increasing green spaces. This with the aim of reducing air pollution and reducing harmful emissions by reducing energy consumption and computerizing educational and administrative processes to reduce paper consumption. All these efforts have resulted in the University maintaining its first position for the fourth consecutive year since it entered the classification in 2017, advancing 100 international ranks from last year. The University of Sharjah ranked 194 globally out of 912 participating universities, third at the GCC level out of 13 participating GCC universities, and the eighth at the level of the Arab world out of 106 participating Arab universities.

It is noteworthy that the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking process is based on six basic criteria through which a number of indicators are measured: infrastructure, suitability of facilities, efficiency in energy use and reduction of gas emissions, and the extent of application of the principles of integrated solid and liquid waste management, effective management of water resources, sustainable transportation, and sustainable development in educational aspects and scientific research in this field.
