Exploring experiences of harmful social media use and harm-reduction strategies among youth from diverse ethnic backgrounds in the UAE
This study aims to explore the negative experiences of social media use among youth in the UAE. Using a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive design, the research examines the lived experiences of participants aged 18 to 25. Four main themes emerged from the findings: (1) social media as part of daily life, (2) negative psychological and emotional effects, (3) social pressure and online harm, and (4) harm reduction strategies. While participants reported experiencing stress, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and exposure to cyberbullying, they also actively employed strategies to reduce harm, such as limiting screen time and engaging in real-life activities. Ultimately, these findings provide important implications for nursing practice, emphasizing the need for mental health awareness, education on healthy digital habits, and culturally appropriate interventions
