Quality of Sleep, Premenstrual Syndrome, and Stress Among Undergraduate Healthcare Sciences Students in the United Arab Emirates

This study examines the relationship between sleep quality, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and perceived stress among female undergraduate healthcare sciences students in the United Arab Emirates. Using a quantitative, descriptive correlational cross-sectional design, researchers analyzed data from 311 participants via standardized questionnaires and SPSS. Findings reveal that students experience moderate to severe PMS symptoms, moderate to high stress levels, and significant sleep disturbances. Notably, PMS positively correlates with perceived stress and sleep problems, while higher stress is directly associated with poorer sleep. Furthermore, stress, sleep disturbance, Internet addiction, smoking, and income levels were all linked to worsened PMS symptoms. To improve student well-being, the study recommends proactive university-based support, including menstrual health awareness, stress-management programs, sleep-hygiene education, and the early identification of at-risk students.
