From Shock to sense-making: Exploring Novice nurses’ genuine psychological experiences in psychiatric emergencies

This study explores novice nurses’ genuine psychological experiences when managing psychiatric emergencies, from the initial shock and emotional distress to the process of sense-making and professional adaptation. It focuses on how fear, uncertainty, confidence, preparedness, and clinical support shape their responses in challenging mental health situations. Ultimately, the findings will help nursing educators and healthcare leaders design targeted support systems and specialized training programs to better equip nurses for acute mental health crises
