Exploring the Impact of Internet Addiction and Sleep Deprivation on Academic Performance among University nursing Students

Internet addiction is increasingly recognized as a major issue negatively impacting academic performance among university students. Excessive use of online activities can reduce the time and focus students devote to academic tasks, leading to lower grades, diminished learning engagement, and reduced academic satisfaction. Research shows that students who struggle to control their internet use often face difficulties in maintaining concentration and completing academic responsibilities. A total of 106 participants were included in the study, of whom 84 percent were female and 16 percent were male. Most participants (63.2 percent) were in levels 4 and 5 of their studies, while 36.8 percent were in levels 1 to 3. In terms of academic performance, 51.9 percent had a CGPA between 2.1 and 3.0, and 48.1 percent had a CGPA between 3.1 and 4.0. The majority (73.6 percent) resided outside the campus, while 26.4 percent lived on campus. The mean age of the participants was 22.10 years (SD = 1.734). This study highlights a moderate level of internet addiction among nursing students, with no significant association found between addiction scores and demographic variables such as gender, Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), or level of study. Although trends suggest that internet overuse may influence academic performance and well-being, further research is needed to explore these relationships more deeply.
