CFAD Heritage Lectures and Workshops Compliment Ongoing Exhibition
CFAD continues its collaboration with Sharjah Heritage Museum to organize activities in conjunction with the ongoing exhibit “Reflections and Inspirations from Emirati Heritage.” The latest four activities included two lectures and two workshops. Dr. Ousama Lazkani’s lecture (Assistant Professor of Visual Communication), “Visual Storytelling Through Cultural Motifs: Transforming Traditional into Tangible”, explored how cultural motifs function as visual storytelling devices, carrying the weight of history, identity, and collective memory. Drawing from visual communication students' work, the presentation investigated the semiotics of motifs, their evolution in design, and their role in heritage preservation. The second lecture by Dr. Hala Georges (Assistant Professor of Visual Communication) was entitled “Reimagining Heritage: Visual Narratives of Sharjah Through Young Designers' Eyes”. It was a curated showcase of visual communication students' work, highlighting their creative interpretations of Sharjah's rich heritage. Through extensive research and critical analysis, the young designers have explored cultural narratives and motifs, alongside historical influences, transforming their findings into visual expressions and products. Meanwhile, Artist and Fine Arts Tutor Thaier Helal led a two-day workshop themed “Contemporizing Heritage” with the objective of connecting the younger generation with Emirati heritage by recomposing elements from their heritage in a contemporary form. The workshop incorporated memories of traditional fabrics and woven straw hand fans onto large-scale canvases, resulting in abstracted artwork. While Artist Unaiza Ismail (Printmaking Lab Officer) led a hands-on workshop introducing participants to the art of handmade papermaking. Participants learnt how to recycle paper fibers into new sheets, experiment with textures and inclusions, and explore sustainable practices in papermaking. Sharjah Heritage Museum Director Ms. Noura Almoughanni was delighted with the outcomes of the collaboration as evidenced by the number of lecturers attendees and workshops participants. She commented on the public’s interaction and engagement in these activities. The exhibit continues to receive visitors until April.
