Master thesis entitled: The Social Consequences of Violence Against Women: A Field Study in the Emirate of Sharjah
This study aims to analyze the social consequences of violence against women by examining the factors and causes that lead to women being subjected to violence.
The study employed a comprehensive social survey methodology, using a questionnaire administered to 100 abused women in the Emirate of Sharjah. These women varied in their social status married, divorced, and widowed and experienced different degrees of violence.
The study considered several social variables such as age, educational level, and the nature of the spouses’ work, as these factors are significant in understanding the nature of violence and its influencing elements.
The questionnaire included four main axes to analyze the empirical results:
- Factors and causes leading to violence against women.
- The impact of violence on marital, familial, and parental roles.
- The effect of violence on child-rearing practices.
- The repercussions of violence on the quality of family relationships.
Data were processed using the SPSS statistical software, employing descriptive statistical methods such as frequencies and percentages to analyze the empirical findings.
Key findings of the study include:
- A consensus among the sample participants that violence against women negatively affects the quality of marital, familial, and parental roles.
- All participants (100%) confirmed that violence against the wife adversely affects child-rearing and the quality of family relationships.
- Most participants were married women (75%), followed by divorced women (18%), and widows (7%), indicating that married women are the most exposed and involved in the issue of violence against women.
The study recommends a deeper understanding of the factors and causes leading to violence against women. It calls on specialized community institutions to reconsider the policies and procedures adopted to support abused women. Additionally, it recommends offering training and awareness programs to help women understand violence and its social and psychological effects, and to develop their skills to face life and marital challenges with awareness and empowerment.
