Doctoral thesis entitled: The Role of Social Stigma in Shaping the Lived Experiences of Individuals Recovering from Addiction: Dubai as a Case Study (An Approach from the Perspective of Social Stigma)
This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of individuals recovering from addiction in the United Arab Emirates from the perspective of social stigma. The study focused on three main themes: the impact of social stigma on social relationships, economic and professional opportunities, and self-esteem. A case study approach was employed as the research methodology, and the study relied on in-depth interviews conducted with a purposive sample of twenty-seven (27) individuals recovering from addiction who had undergone therapeutic and rehabilitation programs at officially recognized centers in the country.
The findings revealed that individuals in recovery face significant challenges in rebuilding their social relationships, as the effects of social stigma persist even after recovery, thereby hindering their ability to reintegrate into society. Moreover, most participants reported experiencing feelings of rejection by their families and the broader community. They also encounter substantial difficulties in securing suitable employment opportunities due to their past history of drug and psychoactive substance use, particularly in light of the absence of a certificate of good conduct. In addition, the results showed that social stigma contributes to decreased self-confidence among individuals in recovery, negatively affecting their psychological and social stability.
The study concluded that the challenges faced by individuals recovering from addiction are multifaceted and intersect across social, psychological, and professional dimensions. Accordingly, the study recommends the development of comprehensive support programs for individuals in recovery at various levels, as well as the need to change societal perceptions and promote efforts to support their reintegration into society.
