Doctoral thesis entitled: Perceptions of Sharjah Police General Command Employees Towards Low Self-Control as an Explanatory Factor for Crime Commission

This study aimed to identify explanations and predictions for the problem of crime commission among drug offenders, violent offenders, and white-collar criminals (fraud and embezzlement) from the perspective of employees in the General Command of Sharjah Police. The study sample consisted of 293 employees from the Criminal Investigation Department, the Anti-Narcotics Department, and the Correctional and Punitive Institutions Department. The sample included 73.7% males and 21.5% females, selected through a nonprobability convenience sample. To achieve the objectives of this study, descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. Frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations were extracted, and t-test, one-way ANOVA, and multiple linear regression (MLR) tests were conducted.

The study results revealed that factors such as risk-taking, preference for physical activities, and self-centeredness among drug offenders are indicators of drug crimes (use, promotion, possession, trade), having a positive impact on committing these crimes. In contrast, factors such as recklessness and impulsivity, mood, and quick and easy gratification were silent indicators for committing this type of crime.

On the other hand, four indicators showed that low self-control among violent offenders has a positive impact on committing violent crimes (murder, various types of assault, fights, etc.), according to the following dimensions: recklessness and impulsivity, preference for physical activities, self-centeredness, and mood. In contrast, factors such as quick and easy gratification and risk-taking were silent indicators for committing this type of crime. Additionally, there was only one indicator for committing white-collar crimes (fraud and embezzlement), which is self-centeredness, having a positive impact on committing these crimes.

Finally, the study results revealed four indicators that low self-control among drug offenders as nonspecialized offenders plays a role in committing violent crimes. According to the following dimensions: risk-taking, preference for physical activities, self-centeredness, and mood, all showed a positive impact on committing violent crimes. In contrast, there were two silent indicators that low self-control among drug offenders has an impact on committing this type of crime, which are recklessness and impulsivity, and quick and easy gratification.
