Doctoral thesis entitled: The Military and political Role of Lieutenant General John Bagot Glubb Pasha in the Jordanian State (1930-1956)

The study aimed to demonstrate the role of

Lieutenant General John Bagot Glubb Pasha in the Jordanian state (1930–1956) by examining his political and military career and his relations with Jordanian state institutions.

The study begins with an introduction, followed by Chapter One, Glubb Pasha’s Career in the Jordanian State, which discusses Britain’s relationship with Transjordan and its future. Chapter Two, The Personality of Glubb Pasha in the Emirate of Transjordan, introduces his background and analyzes the establishment of the Jordanian Desert Patrol, emphasizing his central role in its organization. Chapter Three, Glubb Pasha in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, addresses the transition to monarchy and Glubb’s role in the Arab Israeli War of 1948. Chapter Four, Military and Political Developments during His Tenure, examines his relations with King Talal and the Regency Council, as well as Jordan’s accession to the Baghdad Pact.

The study concludes that Glubb Pasha, from the time of his arrival in the Jordanian desert, succeeded in consolidating his authority over the Bedouin tribes and recruiting their members into his forces. This strengthened their trust in him and contributed to stabilizing the desert by reducing clashes between the tribes and Saudi Arabia. His role was also evident in the Arab Israeli War, along with his involvement in pivotal regional events.

The study recommends making official documents accessible to researchers and conducting further specialized studies on Glubb Pasha and his political and military impact, as the Arab library needs such scholarship.

Keywords: Lieutenant General John Bagot Glubb Pasha, Jordanian state (1930–1956), Arab Legion.
