Master Research: "Rhetorical Argumentation Mechanisms in Surah Ar-Ra'd: A Analytical Study"
This thesis, entitled “Argumentative Mechanisms in Surah Ar-Ra‘d: An Analytical Study,” presents an analysis of the argumentative verses in Surah Ar-Ra‘d by exploring the linguistic and rhetorical mechanisms of argumentation employed in the Qur’anic text. This is carried out using the descriptive-analytical method, with the aim of extracting the meanings of the verses and identifying the argumentative mechanisms contained within them, while focusing on tracing examples of argumentation in the noble surah and highlighting its linguistic and rhetorical features.
The thesis is divided into two chapters, preceded by an introductory section that discusses the concept of argumentation and its historical development, and provides an overview of Surah Ar-Ra‘d along with its main themes. The first chapter examines the linguistic mechanisms of argumentation and is divided into two sections: the first addresses argumentative connectors, such as the particles bal (“rather”) and hatta (“until”), while the second focuses on argumentative factors, including the argumentative function of negation tools and the devices of restriction and exclusivity. The second chapter explores rhetorical mechanisms of argumentation, such as the argumentative roles of declarative and non-declarative expressions, conciseness and elaboration, contrast, and other classifications addressed in the thesis.
The study has produced several findings, most notably the diversity of argumentative connectors and factors in Surah Ar-Ra‘d, which contribute to linking arguments together in order to reach conclusions. These mechanisms play a significant role in strengthening argumentation and in constructing a cohesive Qur’anic text. Furthermore, the rhetorical mechanisms of argumentation reveal the eloquence of Qur’anic expression and its ability to persuade audiences through effective and impactful expressive styles.
