Applied Biology Welcomes high school students: Biotechnology in Action
The Department of Applied Biology, in collaboration with the Undergraduate Student Recruitment and Marketing Department, welcomed high school students to the University of Sharjah. During the visit, students attended engaging presentations by our graduate and teaching assistants highlighting the importance of biotechnology studies across diverse domains, including medicine, forensic science, plant and food security, environmental preservation, and pollution solutions through biological approaches.
The Department Chair also addressed the students, emphasizing how biology played a vital role during the COVID-19 pandemic, from understanding the virus to developing vaccines that helped the world overcome this global crisis. He also introduced Dr. Meriem Bekliz, Department’s newly joined faculty member, who was part of one of the leading international research teams contributing significantly to COVID-19 studies and vaccine-related advancements.
The visit concluded with a laboratory tour in the W8 building, where students observed fascinating experiments that showcased the department’s vibrant research and learning environment.
