Seminar on Social Media and Democratic Norms

The Department of International Relations at the College of Public Policy, University of Sharjah, organized a seminar titled "Social Media and the Erosion of Democratic Norms in the United States," delivered by Professor Jason Gainous on March 14, 2024, at Al Barony Hall (M9). The seminar addressed the evolving role of social media in shaping political communication and examined its impact on democratic norms and institutions in the United States. Professor Gainous discussed the influence of digital platforms on political participation, public opinion, electoral behavior, and democratic governance, while highlighting contemporary challenges such as misinformation, political polarization, and declining trust in democratic institutions. The event attracted faculty members, students, and researchers from across the University, who participated in an interactive discussion and exchanged perspectives on the opportunities and challenges presented by digital media in modern democracies.
