College of Pharmacy Supports UAE High School Students in Innovative Sustainability Research

Dr. Ghalia Khoder from the College of Pharmacy at the University of Sharjah, in collaboration with Dr. Lucy Semerjian from the College of Health Sciences and Ms. Merylin Sebastian, provided scientific mentorship and research support to UAE high school students developing BioFeathers, an innovative sustainability-focused research project.
The students conducted laboratory work at the University of Sharjah, exploring the use of Bacillus subtilis to convert discarded chicken feathers into a nutrient-rich hydrolysate with potential agricultural applications. The initiative provided students with valuable exposure to laboratory research, biotechnology, sustainability, and the practical application of scientific methods.
The project received support through the Emerging Pathogens and Antibiotic Resistance Research Group, headed by Dr. Mohamad Hamad, and the Infectious Diseases and Anti-Infective Therapeutics Research Group, headed by Professor Sameh Soliman. The students are also exploring opportunities to further develop and evaluate the project through engagement with relevant organizations and agricultural initiatives in the United Arab Emirates.
The innovative project attracted media attention and was featured by Gulf News on September 25, 2026, highlighting the students’ efforts to transform discarded chicken feathers into materials with potential agricultural applications.
This initiative reflects the College of Pharmacy’s commitment to community engagement, interdisciplinary collaboration, youth research mentorship, sustainability, and supporting innovative research with potential societal and environmental impact.
