University of Sharjah Researcher Wins Second Place in DUPHAT Research Global Award 2026

Dr. Ahmad Abuhelwa, associate professor at the College of Pharmacy, University of Sharjah, received Second Place in the DUPHAT Research Global Award 2026, presented during DUPHAT 2026, held from August 25 to 27, 2026, at the Dubai World Trade Centre in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, for his research project entitled “Listening to the Patient Voice: Physical Function Predicts Survival with Daratumumab in Multiple Myeloma.”

The award-winning research investigated the value of patient-reported physical function in predicting treatment outcomes in multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. Using individual patient-level data from 1,804 patients across three major randomized clinical trials, the study demonstrated that patients’ own assessments of their physical function can provide clinically meaningful information beyond conventional clinician-based assessments.

The findings highlight the potential role of patient-reported outcomes in supporting more personalized cancer treatment decisions and reinforce the importance of incorporating the patient perspective into clinical research and precision oncology. The research has also attracted considerable international attention across scientific, medical, and news platforms.

This recognition highlights the research excellence and clinical relevance of the College of Pharmacy’s scientific contributions and reflects its continued commitment to advancing evidence-based, patient-centered pharmaceutical and health care research.
