Scientific Poster Competition - World Pharmacists Day 2026

A team of students from the College of Pharmacy at the University of Sharjah won Third Place in the Scientific Poster Competition held as part of the World Pharmacists Day 2026 celebrations on September 24, 2026.
The award-winning poster, entitled “Environmental Afterlife of Drugs: Pharmacists’ Role in Reducing Pharmaceutical Pollution,” was presented by Maryam Almazrouei, Khadejah Alrefai, and Renad Alduwailah under the supervision of Dr. Muna B. Najm.
The poster explored the environmental journey of medicines beyond their use by patients, from medication disposal and wastewater treatment to the potential presence of pharmaceutical residues in aquatic environments. It highlighted the potential environmental and public health implications of pharmaceutical pollution, including aquatic toxicity and antimicrobial resistance, and emphasized the important role pharmacists can play in addressing this challenge.
The students proposed practical measures including medicine take-back programs, appropriate disposal counseling, antibiotic stewardship, and eco-pharmacovigilance advocacy, demonstrating how pharmacists can contribute to reducing pharmaceutical pollution and protecting both public and environmental health.
This achievement reflects the College of Pharmacy’s commitment to student research, environmental awareness, sustainability, and the expanding role of pharmacists in addressing contemporary public health challenges.
