Why Basic Medical Sciences?
The University of Sharjah's Department of Basic Medical Sciences (BMS), which focuses on teaching human biology, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and genetics. It provides the fundamental knowledge and framework required for programs in medicine, dentistry, and health science. Established in 2006 as part of an expanding institution founded in 1997, our department prioritizes community involvement, research, and education quality. Research on diabetes mellitus, cancer, cardiovascular disease, regenerative medicine, and education is among the many topics of interest for our staff. With experience in both undergraduate and graduate medical programs, our faculty is vibrant and plays key roles in curriculum creation and evaluation procedures. Our undergraduate medical program emphasizes integrated, competency-driven, student-centered teaching via the use of a hybrid Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model.
Furthermore, the department plays a crucial role in delivering courses for postgraduate programs, including Doctorate and Master's degrees in Molecular Medicine and Translational Research, a Master's in Leadership in Health Professions Education, and a Master's in Diabetes Management. Furthermore, we provide PhD and postgraduate Master's programs in molecular and biomedical medicine. Our department works in conjunction with the clinical Science departments, the University Hospital of Sharjah (UHS), the Research Institute for Medical and Health Sciences (RIHMS), and the Sharjah Institute for Medical Research (SIMR). to create an environment that is supportive of state-of-the-art interdisciplinary research in the areas of cardiovascular, diabetes immunological, infectious, and cancer diseases. We are dedicated to producing top-notch medical professionals and biomedical scientists, and we place a high value on career growth, equitable opportunity, and a supportive work environment for both our students and staff.
