The Inverse Greenhouse
The Inverse Greenhouse “IG” project addresses food security in the UAE, by designing a climate-adapted agricultural system that ejects heat using geometrical properties and cools using evaporative cooling, suitable for plant life during the summertime. The methodology involved detailed solar radiation analysis from May to September, using calculated beam tilt factors (Rb) and incident energy (Htilt) to predict surface heating under local conditions. Thermal modeling incorporated convection and radiation equations to estimate outer and inner surface temperatures of a polycarbonate pyramid structure. Finally, Hydroponic systems, specifically the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), were selected to optimize water use and crop growth.
