Portable Lab Solution for Digital Twin Design and Implementation: Buoyancy Work Energy Storage System Case Study

Technological advancements have transformed industries, enhancing decision-making, operations, and consumer experiences. Digital twins combine simulation models with real-time data acquisition to analyze operations, predict future system status, and optimize system performance. The development of portable laboratories has also transformed research and experimentation, allowing the collection of data and conducting of experiments in a wide range of environments, breaking down traditional barriers associated with fixed laboratory settings and enhancing lab flexibility and accessibility. This project aims to address the educational gap related to digital twins. Despite the importance of those digital skills, many universities lack the necessary resources and lab facilities to teach students to design and implement digital twins. The project aims to create a general methodology through which students can design, implement, and use digital twins and a user-friendly, low-cost lab kit for digital twin design and implementation. The project is tested on a case study of the buoyancy energy storage system.
