The Department of Electrical Engineering organized its first Industrial Perspectives event for this year on Wednesday Dec. 18, 2019 at 12:30 pm. The event included a talk by Dr. Mohamed Bamakhrama has worked for several years at Intel Corporation, NXP Semiconductors and ASML, and is currently a staff engineer at Synopsys Corporation in the Netherlands. The talk, titled "Energy-Efficient Deep Learning: An Industrial Perspective", explored the cutting edge Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), which find applications in many Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications including computer vision, speech recognition, robotics etc… Designing energy-efficient hardware architectures for deep neural networks is an important step towards enabling the wide deployment of DNNs in AI systems. Dr. Mohamed explored in his talk the factors that influence energy consumption and their impact and discussed different implementations of the presented concepts and their performance, power, and area (PPA) figures. The talk was be followed by an enriching discussion with faculty members that explored areas of common interest and potential collaboration. This event is a step forward towards achieving the strategic vision of University of Sharjah in encouraging cutting-edge research and fostering positive interaction with the industry. We are proud that Dr. Mohamed Bamakhrama is one of our graduates, who completed his Bachelor's degree at UoS in 2005.
