I believe learning is a long-run concept and the teacher should be patient, dynamic and cooperative. Independent thought, sharing ideas and utilizing the learned knowledge is a main component of learning. For learning to occur, students have to know that this process is important and it will change their lives, attitudes and way of thinking. Communication between the teacher and the students is an important key to the success of this reaction. The continuity of this communication in the office hours is vital to help students to absorb some difficult materials.
It is important to be fair and making special arrangements to students whose classes conflict with the scheduled office hours. Students need to feel comfortable approaching their instructor for a discussion outside the classroom. During the communication, it is a good chance to the teacher to memorize students’ names and show sincere interest in each individual.
In any science certain facts should be learned, exams encourage memorizing, and should cover the material every student is expected to know. However, it is important to encourage critical thinking and stimulate student’s creativity. Homework and assignments help to achieve this target. In Engineering, it is important to open a classroom discussion to utilize different models to study and explain various phenomenon.
At the same time, there is an opportunity for the faculty to learn more from their students. The campus is full of thousands of students whom represent a world of new and young knowledge and experience, and some students have highly trained programs. It will be a good chance to learn from their questions, comments and ideas. Teachers should grow as fast as the student do, and this helps faculty to have young minds.
