Civil engineers need to have a solid foundation of basic sciences, mathematics, and engineering concepts that they will apply to solve real-world problems. I treat every student as a potential engineer and encourage him/her to build up solid fundamental knowledge, improve problem-solving and analytical thinking capabilities, and develop decision-making skills. For this purpose and to assist students put in context what they learn, I reinforce the class material with classical and novel transportation engineering applications.
