The Department of Preventive and Restorative Dentistry comprises of seven specialties including
Community Dentistry and Preventive Dentistry, Removable and Fixed
Prosthodontics, Operative Dentistry, Endodontics, Periodontology, Pediatric
Dentistry and Orthodontics. Preclinical and clinical educational programs
operate within the laboratories and clinics of the dental facilities. We
integrate emerging technologies into the education program and in the delivery
of patient care.
The Department has the
largest responsibility for the clinical teaching at the College of Dental
Medicine and University Dental Hospital Sharjah, with particular focus on
providing patient centered comprehensive dental care. The Department is also
committed to preparing future dentists to understand and recognize principles
of preventive dentistry as it applied to individual patients and communities with
special emphasis on special needs and underserved populations.
Research at the Department
spans the spectrum from basic to translational to clinical to population health
research. The Department is very active in biomaterial and dental public health
research, with funding from the industry as well as the University. Areas of emphasis include, Dental
Biomaterials, Biomimetic and related sciences. A major focus of this research
area is the development of an enhanced understanding of reasons for the clinical
success or failure of dental biomaterials. Research in dental public health and
behavioral science includes a spectrum of ongoing projects, related to the
estimates of the prevalence of oral conditions in the UAE population,
prevention of oral diseases and the assessment of the impact of oral conditions
on quality of life.
