I have 14 years of teaching experience since January 2007 at different universities such as the American University in the Emirates, and Mansoura University, and, with a valuable experience leading graduate and undergraduate discussion sections for both Information Technology majors and non-majors. During this period, I taught many courses at both undergraduate level and graduate level using different teaching styles such as online teaching, hybrid teaching and traditional teaching. I believe that students learn more by thinking than by memorizing. Therefore, in my discussion lectures, I do not spell out the solutions in a snap, especially in the online teaching that needs to involve the students in everything during the class. Instead, I design step-by-step sub-questions to guide the students through the problem and encourage them to come up with the intended solution or alternative ones. Then I would also ask the students to compare and explain the advantages and disadvantages of different solutions to the same problem. Three points highlight my teaching philosophy. First, I believe that students get more from a lecture if they are taking notes, versus having them before class, processing the information as the lecture progresses. Second, I believe that students must be provided with the "big picture" and how what they are being taught fits into said context. If students understand the relevance and importance of a topic, they will likely be more motivated to learn. Real-life examples are a critical issue to achieve this goal. Third, and most importantly, I do not believe in hand-holding the students. It is my experience that setting firm and high expectations and carrying through on these expectations motivate students to rise to the occasion, resulting in students working more effectively and, therefore, learning more. I believe that in a field such as computer science, students learn much better if they are forced to discover the answers on their own, through trial and error, rather than have all their “How do I do this” questions answered.
