My text Banking: An Introductory Text (Macmillan: London) published in 1990 was based largely on my first year Banking lecture course at Bangor. In addition, I have also recently completed another introductory banking text first published in 2006 (with B.Casu and C. Girardone) and the 2nd edition was published in 2015 - this is widely used for teaching undergraduate first and second year banking students and many universities in the UK and elsewhere. During my academic career at Bangor I developed new, innovatory courses in 'Comparative Banking' (H1) and the 'Industrial Structure of Banking' (H2 and MA). Our co-authored text on ‘Efficiency in European Banking’ was used as the basis for both of these courses. These courses were unique to Bangor and Bangor's degree programmes, and they combined institutional, analytical and industrial economics into courses concerned with banking structure, development, competition, efficiency and related issues. In September 1998 I was involved in the launch of a new MBA in Banking & Finance which included courses (among other things) on investment banking, private banking, bank trade finance and strategic management of the financial firm, all of which I was involved teaching. I was also involved in the launch of three business and banking related Master’s courses in the early 2000s and in 2004 completed texts on Islamic Banking (Palgrave Macmillan) and Arab Banking and Financial Systems (Palgrave Macmillan) that led to me introducing new MSc and MBA courses in Islamic Banking & Finance. I have also edited the Oxford Handbook of Banking in 2010 (second edition in 2015) which has become the standard global Masters text in banking. In all the aforementioned areas my research is linked closely to lecture courses and their development.
