On October 6th, 2022, in Al Farabi Hall W3, students and faculty of the Department of Foreign Languages were treated to an energetic and enlightening lecture by Professor Mohammed Habib on Literary Theory. Prof. Habib is a Visiting Professor in the DFL for the Fall Semester, joining us from Rutgers University where he is a Distinguished Professor of English. The question his paper posed was, “Literary Theory: Do We Need It?” The event, organized as part of the regular DFL Faculty Seminar Series, was moderated by Dr. Andrew J. Power of the DFL and was very well attended by students and faculty. In the audience also were the Department Chair, Prof. Ghaleb Rababah, and the Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Science, Prof. Nader El-Bizri, all of whom took part in what was a lively discussion ensuing from Prof. Habib’s talk. His paper rendered accessible some of the most difficult philosophical and theoretic material in the study of English literature. The enthusiasm with which the literature students of the college responded and the sophistication of their questions suggest that need it or not, our students are ready for and welcome the challenges posed by Literary Theory.
