Welcome Note from the Coordinator

Welcome to your Surgery I Clerkship!

This rotation can be one of the most memorable experiences of your clinical years.  You would be excited for a unique learning opportunity to observe procedures such as thyroidectomy, prostatectomy, a laparoscopic gastric bypass, a trauma, or even an appendectomy.

As you will be getting more and more involved with patient care in the hospitals and getting closer to real life practice, this clinical coaching will prepare you to enter your next phase and function as an intern in the hospital.

As faculty and residents, we see this as an opportunity to teach you some basic concepts about surgery that will benefit you regardless of which field you opt for after graduation. You will notice the dynamic and versatile life of surgeons and their surgical skills and competencies in patient management. The core philosophy of surgery rotation is to understand basic principles of surgery, patient safety and professionalism, integration of clinical findings with lab and imaging data, and working in multidisciplinary teams.

With the help of this guide, I hope to unlock the mystery of surgery and to provide a clear roadmap on how to embark on this journey with great success.
