Welcome to the Family medicine clerkship!
The Family Medicine is a medical specialty that provides continuing and comprehensive medical care for individuals and families, integrating the biological, clinical and behavioral sciences in the care of the patient. Family Medicine differs from other specialties in that it encompasses all ages, genders, each organ system and every disease entity. The heart of Family Medicine is the patient-physician relationship viewed in the context of the patient’s family. It is the extent to which this relationship is valued, developed and maintained that makes Family Medicine unique among the specialties. You will spend most of your time in the clerkship in primary care settings where you will see patients under the supervision of Family Medicine faculty who will teach and guide you in the care of patients and families.
The clerkship faculty will strive to provide a stimulating and fulfilling learning experience. They will provide you with hands-on opportunities to diagnose and manage many common medical conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension and asthma, and counsel patients to prevent or lessen the severity of these conditions and provide prenatal care as well as women’s health and child health.
At the end of this program, you will have gained core knowledge and skills essential for a thorough formulation of the clinical problems of your patients (integral, workable and consistent formulation). Also, you will have acquired the ability to design proficient plans for management of patients with these presentations rather than detailed tactics of investigating and treating catalogued diseases. These competencies will be acquired through both supervision and practice in different clinical settings and will be fostered by appropriate teaching and evaluation.
So all the best! The Department of Family Medicine is here to support you and hope to make your clerkship program a fabulous one in both professional and personal development.
