Prof. Abderrahmane Azzi is currently professor and head of Department of Mass Communication, University of Sharjah. Born and raised in Algeria, Azzi studied journalism at the University of Algiers, later becoming a reporter for El Chaab (the people) daily newspaper in Algiers. As a graduate of North Texas State University in Journalism and Sociology of Mass Communication (M.A and Ph.D.), Azzi taught for forty years in NTSU (TF), University of Algiers, IIUM University, Malaysia, King Saud University, Saudi Arabia, UAEU University, Al Ain, UAE and University of Sharjah, UAE. Azzi held many administration positions as head of department and vice dean. He was Dean of College of Communication, UoS, from 2011 to 2016 during which the College received accreditation from ACEJMC. Azzi is most known for his theory called VDT (Value Determinism Theory of Media), a theory commented by media scholars as Christians G. Clifford, Maxell McCombs, author of Agenda-Setting Theory, and Em Griffin. The University of Mostaganem, Algeria, instituted “Azzi’s Chair for Studies in Media and Value Systems” since 2014. The Chair Foundation organized eight annual regional conferences with published proceedings on the subject so far.
