First National Graduate Communication Student Conference


"Digital Technologies & Media Industries: New Opportunities, New Challenges"


About the Conference:

We live in a fast-paced digital world where the business of producing and delivering news content and media entertainment is changing, and where the proliferation of smart devices, artificial intelligence (AI), the internet of Things (IoT) and big data, are liable to grow even more ubiquitous and influential.  These transformations pose serious challenges for societies around the world as governments, businesses and ordinary citizens are struggling to keep pace with their implications and far reaching impact on all spheres of life.   

 We are inviting graduate students with a wide range of interests to engage in discussions about the spectrum of current issues revolving around digital technologies and media practices, and their implications for the present and the future. The main objective of this conference is to provide a space for graduate students to network and share their research on these transformations and their effects on multiple aspects of our lives and our society. Possible topics include, but are not limited to the following:

  • News media and social networks  
  • Fake news and information disorders
  • Digital media and public relations
  • Digital media and crisis management
  • Emerging media business models
  • Artificial intelligence and the news industry
  • Integrated Marketing Communication and advertising
  • Gender and digital education
  • Technology and identity
  • Digital media and media ethics
  • Digital media and Government Communication


Call for Papers:

The conference will be held on March 25-26, 2019 at the University of Sharjah. Graduate students in the UAE are encouraged to submit abstracts on a topic of their choice relating to the theme of the conference. Joint research between faculty and graduate students are also welcome. 

-Important Dates & Deadlines:

December 10, 2019: Abstract Submission Deadline

December 26, 2019: Notification to authors

February 20, 2020: Full Paper Submission Deadline


-Submission Guidelines:

A 300 word abstract in English and full author details will be sent to the conference email ( Selection of conference papers is based on abstract. Each abstract will be blind-reviewed by the members of the Scientific Committee. The conference also welcomes work-in-progress papers.

Selected papers will be published at a "Special issue" of a peer-reviewed academic journal.  In order to be considered for the publication, the participants need to submit their full paper in English by February 20, 2020.  Both abstracts and papers should be submitted as MS word file or Pdf. Further information on full paper submission will be provided.
