In brief, I believe, it is important to teach students how to start the subject, in a step-by-step manner. This is essential for introductory-level courses. The case is slightly different in higher-level courses (i.e., MSc). I deem that in the advanced university levels further emphasis should be given to group/team work and collaboration with others, critical evaluation of the state-of-the-art solutions, practical ways to embrace and adopt the planning, design and development techniques that they were taught during the first levels, to prepare them to the real work/practical environment. Students in these advanced levels must also be learnt how to organise their work as early as possible. Finally, the ability to intelligently and objectively critique the related work is a necessary precursor to be in a position to accurately evaluate others’ work.
