Sharjah TV – Amasi Short Interview on the second edition of the Computing and Informatics Annual Symposium (CIAS2021)

Prof. Mohammad S. Obaidat, Dean of the College of Computing and Informatics was hosted at the daily Sharjah TV program Amasi. In his brief conversation, the Dean expressed his sincere gratitude to HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi for his vision and guidance in establishing the college, and HH Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chair of the advisory board of the college and for the continuous support and advice on our curriculum and feedback on college learning outcomes.

The dean further explored the critical value for the second edition of the Computing and Informatics Annual Symposium (CIAS2021) that aims to bridge important ties with strategic partnership with leading technology pioneers and partners in the domain.

Prof. Obaidat has also highlighted the rich variety of explored topics during the one-day event, covering major vital areas for any nation to survive and compete in the knowledge economy era, as we witness a key transcending point celebrating 50 years of achievements in UAE with a strategic eye on the coming 50 years vision. The Dean added that COVID-19 has changed the way we act and work and the world after COBDO-19 will be different from Before COVID-19.

Prof. Obaidat emphasized the role of the symposium to exchange expertise between academic researchers and their industry peers, constituting a valuable learning opportunity for student researchers who participated in the symposium with their work at the graduate and undergraduate level. One of the highlights of the event was the two keynotes delivered on vital topic from industry experts in cyber security and artificial intelligence applications for real-world problems.

The Dean also highlighted the exemplary model for all colleges and universities to outreach for building bridges with local and national industrial and governmental partnership dedicated to serve the community, preparing a generation of youth not only to face the challenges of the future, but to shape their own.

With this aim in mind the College of Computing and Informatics had already prepared number of interdisciplinary programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels including a PhD. in computer Science. Eight of these programs are in the process of accreditation and approval process from the CAA of the Ministry of Education in UAE and are expected to start their first intake in Spring 2021 or Fall 2022. Three more programs waiting approval of the Board of Trustees.

In response to a question about the main college achievements, the Dean stressed that despite being recently established, the College houses the Computer Science Program/Field that has been ranked as Number 1 in UAE as per very recent ranking by the worldwide known Times for Higher Education Ranking, which is the ONLY program ranked as NUMBER 1 in UAE by an international Agency since the inception of the University of Sharjah in 1997.

He added that the college organized 3 top notch international conferences including the IEEE International Conference on Communications, Computing, Cybersecurity and Informatics, IEEE CCCI 2021 that provided top quality acted papers from all over the world. Its papers are appearing now in IEEE Xplore and SCOPUS.

It also organized the 2020 International Symposium on E-commerce and Cybersecurity, which was really a big success that served in addition to academic community, it served the business and industrial community and our partners at Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

IN addition, the College organized the 2020/2021 International Forum on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in cooperation with Sharjah Chamber of Commerce, where we have played the major role in its organization and technical aspects.

According to a recent worldwide ranking agency, the Dean of CCI, Mohammad S. Obaidat, has been ranked on the TOP of all Computer Scientists in UAE in terms of Number of Publications in DBLP data base as per recent ranking by Guide2Reserach worldwide agency.

The number of Scopus publications per faculty member in the college in the past year was 7.5 SCOPUS papers per faculty member and this is the highest rate in the University of Sharjah.

The faculty member who has the highest number of SCOPUS publications in the Scopus database at the UoS is one of the faculty members in the college of Computing & Informatics- He has as of few days, 937 publications, of which 82 are in the year 2020.
