21 UNIVERSITY OF SHARJAH - COLLEGE OF GRADUATE STUDIES MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT (MEM) PROGRAM Individuals with combined technical expertise and business skills are increasingly in demand by organizations that seek sustainable competitive advantage. If you hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering and your career goal is to be a manager or business leader, then the program in engineering management at the University of Sharjah is specifically designed for you. The MScEM program aims to prepare engineers from various specializations to address advanced and challenging engineering problems taking into account the technical and socio-economic factors and implications. It also prepares its graduates to assume leading roles in their organizations in the determination of best approaches to manage changes in the engineering processes and benefit from relevant technological innovations. After graduation, graduates will be able to apply knowledge, skills and techniques of engineering and management to execute contemporary activities and operations effectively and efficiently. They will also understand the concepts and application of good management practices to foster innovation and sustain global competitiveness and be able to Identify, analyze, formulate, and solve advanced engineering problems and highly complex matters that involve constrained resources. MASTER OF SCIENCE IN BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING The MSBME program accepts students from different undergraduate disciplines to be admitted to this program. As such, in order to provide the best learning experience to the graduate students regardless of their undergraduate background, the program is designed to help the student bridge the gap between their background and the MSBME program. As a first step, the program provides 2 remedial courses based on the admitted student’s bachelor’s background. The remedial courses are chosen such that all students are prepared for the graduate core courses offered by the program. The graduate student is required to take the remedial courses in the first semester such that by the second semester all graduate students have the core-based information and background that qualifies them to continue towards the graduate core courses offered by the program. An example for such case, a student with B.Sc. in Medicine, Dentistry, or Health Sciences has enough biological background to continue forward with some MSBME courses; however, they fall short in the mathematical background from an engineering point of view. Therefore, they are required to successfully finish two remedial courses, “Differential Equations for Engineers” and “Mathematics for Engineers”. The opposite goes for students with engineering background, where they fall short in biological background. Hence, they are required two remedial courses, “Human Anatomy and Physiology”, and “Cell Biology”. The same goes for students with science or pharmaceutical background, the MSBME program specifies to students their required remedial courses. Once the remedial courses are taken, all students are allowed to register for the graduate core courses. The M.Sc. in BME program is designed to produce graduates that are able to identify and analyze potential problems in biomedical engineering, and formulate structured solutions for biomedical engineering present and anticipated problems. Graduates from the program are expected to be able to implement solutions effectively in various domains in biomedical engineering and/or interrelated areas of industry, research, and clinical practice. DOCTOR OF-PHILOSOPHY IN CIVIL ENGINEERING The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering introduced the PhDCE Program to provide the opportunity for qualified engineers to advance their career through knowledge and knowledge discovery skills in the modern civil engineering specializations. The Program will enable its students to cover advanced theory and design procedures to advance to higher level of competency in their profession. The Program is also intended to support the development of quality and relevant research, especially applied research in the various disciplines of Civil Engineering including: structural, geotechnical, environmental, water resources, transportation, pavement, and construction management. The program will help satisfy the demand and national need for highly educated, qualified, and specialized engineers who can contribute to and lead the scientific and technological development in the UAE and the region.

24 The College of Health Sciences The College of Health Sciences at the University of Sharjah through educational programs that emphasize evidence- based practice prepares competent, culturally sensitive and safe professionals: fosters self-directed learning; encourages research and community services; promotes interdisciplinary collaboration; and builds professional leadership and commitment. The College of Health Sciences at the University of Sharjah aspires to become a leading academic institution for quality education, research, and community service at the national, regional, and international levels. MASTER OF SCIENCE IN MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCES Owing to great advances in biomedicine and technology, the role of medical laboratory specialists in patient care and management has gained great momentum in recent years. The wide array of diagnostic lab tests performed by the diagnostic lab in any health care facility is a cornerstone upon which physicians and practitioners base their professional decisions as to how to treat and manage patients. Hence, there is a growing need for highly qualified senior lab practitioners who could oversee the work of specialist and ensure the highest level of quality. Hospitals and other health care facilities as well as accrediting entities consider it a pre-requisite for any medical diagnosis lab to be supervised by competent and well-trained individuals. The department of Medical Lab Sciences at the University of Sharjah prides itself on being one of few academic departments in the UAE and the Gulf Region to train competent medical lab scientists. However, as junior professionals, it takes our graduates many years of practice to gain the experience and knowledge necessary to work as senior lab managers. Additionally, there are batteries of advanced and technically-challenging biochemical and molecular tests that need special training and can only be conducted by senior specialists. The proposed program is designed in such a way to help prospective students to develop the theoretical background and technical skills needed for such professional roles through tailor-made theoretical and practical courses. Students will also acquire the theoretical and practical experience in lab quality control and quality assurance by enrolling in compulsory courses designed to help them achieve this goal. Gaining enough proficiency to be an effective liaison of the profession, be it with medical teams at their facility, government agencies, public and private health care sectors, or quality control/assurance entities requires much deeper knowledge and experience than what a regular undergraduate training program in medical lab sciences would usually provide.
